Heritage and Wellbeing Research for Warm Welcome Spaces

ChurchWorks, in partnership with Historic England, is researching the impact of heritage on wellbeing in Warm Welcome Spaces located in historic church buildings. This study will help churches demonstrate the value of their Warm Welcome Spaces and the importance of preserving their buildings.

How to Participate

If you are involved with a Warm Welcome Space, or know someone who is, we invite you to participate. We are surveying visitors to explore the impact of different spaces on wellbeing.

This briefing document includes everything you need to facilitate the survey, including the questions and a QR code poster for visitors to access the survey.

'A Place of Living'

The role of Heritage Buildings on Community Wellbeing in a 'Decade of Renewal'

Our report, funded by Historic England, illustrates the unique contribution of Warm Welcome Spaces located in heritage churches to community wellbeing. We share why engaging in heritage is important for our future health and how communities and public services can make the most of our historic church buildings.

Using our research, we have produced a booklet for local churches on making the most of your heritage buildings for community activities. If you're part of a local church, have a look below

The mission of ChurchWorks

The ChurchWorks Commission brings together 16 major UK Christian denominations to unite and promote action on urgent social issues in our local communities, with a particular focus on supporting the most vulnerable. We help churches and Christian organisations to collaborate with each other and the Government to catalyse partnership working around our mission areas:

Wellbeing & Mental Health

Growing the church’s role in supporting people’s mental health and improving their wellbeing

Vulnerable Children & Families

Promoting the church's contribution to ensure children and families thrive in their local communities

Tackling Poverty

Supporting churches to help and advocate for those experiencing poverty or struggling with the cost of living

"Thank you for all that you and your team are doing to help energise and mobilise the church to respond to the community needs around them, and make a real Kingdom difference"

What people are saying about ChurchWorks

Better when we do it together

In this time, we are needed. There is loneliness, despair, hopelessness which the church is able to engage with and the church is far better when we do it together.

Anthony Cotterill

A practical partner

The ChurchWorks Commission provides for the Church of England with a practical partner in engagement on policy and in action on the ground in responding to key issues affecting our communities.

Mark Betson

Helps us see the bigger picture

The ChurchWorks Commission helps us as a team to see the bigger picture - political, faith, church and community; serving alongside other organisations.

Paul Weston

Appreciate our partnership

The Salvation Army appreciates their partnership with the ChurchWorks Commission. Working inter-denominationally is a priority to us and we see how mission and ministry can serve our communities when we work in partnership together. It is helpful to share ideas, resources and common desire for raising Kingdom Values in government, state and Church partnerships.

Lisa Lloyd-Jones

Helped us to collaborate with other charities

Working with ChurchWorks has helped us to collaborate with other charities focusing on social impact. There is so much to be done presently in the UK, and it has been such a blessing to not only hear how other charities are working on these issues and sharing the load, but also how we can collaborate and use our skill sets to support one another to be more efficient as we move forwards.

Growing Hope

A vital ecumenical partner

ChurchWorks has been pivotal not only in bringing churches together to coordinate the warm welcome campaign but to convince inter church conversations about mental health and isolation too. ChurchWorks is a vital ecumenical partner of CTE and we remain committed to supporting the work it commissions.

Bishop Mike Royal

A great opportunity to collaborate

“Working with ChurchWorks has been a great opportunity to collaborate across denominations and organisations. We've been part of projects that would not be possible without this network of partners. In particular, we've valued playing a role in the Warm Welcome Campaign and sharing our expertise with spaces across the country”

Dan Lane

Excellent opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for God’s people everywhere to make a difference in bringing healing, reconciliation and raising hope for so many people.

Bishop Tedroy Powell

I'm hugely encouraged

I'm hugely encouraged that the church is stepping up and reaching out! So much going on and it's great to know so many helping across the country. Keep up the good work and keep letting us know what's going on.

A conduit for bringing groups together

We believe that to serve local communities and see community transformation, churches, government, and charities need to work together in partnership. This is exactly what ChurchWorks aims to do – it is a conduit for bringing these groups together to work more holistically and not in silos, to see those who are most in need supported well.

Demonstrates the willingness of churches

The Warm Welcome Campaign demonstrates the willingness of churches and different community organisations across the UK to partner, and most importantly, to come alongside and serve those most in need this winter and beyond.

Alicia Edmund

Solving the needs of its community

The church should be involved in solving the needs of its community… the Church can play a wonderful role in reaching people, connecting people, in praying for people, in dealing with issues such as mental wellbeing and domestic abuse for people within and outside the church.
